Each year, Science Care works with the National Forest Foundation to plant trees in national forests throughout the country to honor the life of every donor who makes the choice to donate. This restoration helps to preserve public land and provide food and habitat for wildlife. Science Care is proud to help the earth and humanity heal through life-affirming action. The Science Care Memory in Nature® Program is a small way we honor the gift of donation to science and leave the world a better place for future generations.
The Science Care Team was able to participate in a few local Arizona restoration projects in late 2021.

As part of your New Year’s TO-DOs, we encourage you to ensure your wishes for end-of-life are known to your loved ones, regardless of your age or health status. Preparing legal documents such as a living will, medical power of attorney, or a durable power of attorney allows your loved ones to have peace of mind when the need to make decisions for you arises. In 2022, consider sitting down and getting your documents in order. Express your wishes, have conversations with loved ones, and remember that it doesn’t have to be gloomy. You’re just giving your friends and family peace of mind and maybe even sparking the conversation for them to do the same.
For more information visit the attorney general’s website for your state or meet with an estate attorney to help you prepare all your documents.
Year after year the top goal for most people as they head into the New Year is focusing on improving their health. This doesn’t always mean weight loss; it could be quitting smoking, organizing your life to improve mental health, or re-evaluating exercise and nutrition plans. Regardless of your goals, realistic goal setting can help you to create better long-term habits. It is estimated 64% of people give up on their New Year goals within a month. To be more successful, consider setting mini milestones you can check off and always try to make your goals enjoyable.
Keep in mind every second of every day we get the chance to do something different. It shouldn’t take a new year to set new goals. Just keep working toward your goals and be kind to yourself along the way.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month
Glaucoma is a progressive disease which causes build-up of fluid within the eyes, translating to increased pressure on the optic nerves, causing irreversible damage, partial vision loss, and eventual blindness. It is estimated that roughly 15-20% of all glaucoma patients will eventually succumb to full blindness in at least one eye, even with regular doctor visits and application of topical and oral treatments currently available.
Common treatments for glaucoma are aimed at slowing and/or preventing vision loss through the reduction of pressure in the eyes and include prescription eye drops and oral medications intended to improve drainage of pressure inducing fluids. As with any medication, effectiveness can vary from patient to patient, and use of medications can cause side effects in both related and unrelated areas of the body. There is no cure for glaucoma, and treatment cannot reverse vision loss. But when consistently utilized, topical and oral medications can prevent the disease from advancing and causing further vision loss.
Members of the Science Care community are aiding researchers in the development of new and more effective means of treating glaucoma and preventing the ultimate result of the disease: irreversible loss of vision and blindness.
One such improvement Science Care donors are aiding in developing is the creation and further development of minimally invasive surgical instruments and implantable devices intended to allow for constant and consistently effective drainage of excess fluid from the eye. The utilization of an implantable device has multiple intended benefits to the patient. The potential for elimination of the use of medications as treatment has the effect of avoiding the side effects experienced by patients when being treated with medication. Additionally, an omnipresent implantable device eliminates the need for a patient to remember to apply eye drops and/or take oral medication on a schedule. Since glaucoma is a progressive disease, missing or postponing treatments can have the effect of allowing the disease to progress.
Vision, the sense of sight, is arguably the most important of the five senses, as it impacts nearly every aspect of life. The contribution and impact that members of the Science Care community are having in the fight against this progressive disease is clear to see! Developments in the treatment of glaucoma and preservation of sight allow patients to retain their independence and maintain a high quality of life.
It is a common misconception that previous surgeries or age rule out donation. This is not always true. Anyone 18 years of age or older should consider themselves a potential donor. Most people meet the criteria for body donation to science, including those with cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, previous surgeries, and many other chronic conditions.
