Peter Herke
Tribute
Peter Joachim Herke, 81, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on November 15, 2024. Peter was born on November 17, 1942, in Berlin, Germany. After journeyman school in Berlin, Peter relocated to Switzerland to become an auto mechanic focusing on Alfa Romeo luxury Italian vehicles. Subsequently, he returned to Berlin to specialize in BMWs. Continuing his passion for cars, in 1968 he took an offer in Honolulu, Hawaii, but realized the company did not meet his standards. With sound advice from other mechanics, he headed to mainland USA, San Francisco, California, to secure a job with BMW. There he pursued his mechanical ability to become his own boss in 1971, opening Europa Motors in Castro Valley, California. Peter made a name for himself there until his retirement in 1996, which led him and his wife to Sarasota, Florida. Peter, in his own way, cherished his family and was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, always offering sound advice on cars, providing unwavering support to his family, and cracking a funny joke now and then. His love for them was not always obvious but evident to everyone who knew him, and he held a special place in their hearts. Peter also held a lifelong passion for racing, with anything that had four wheels. His racing career, along with his son’s, often filled family time at the track with joy and laughter. Peter’s love for cars and the racetrack was infectious. He loved to speak about it with anyone who would listen. Peter’s major success came after meeting his wife. He and his wife, Rosemarie, first met in San Francisco at a German Dance and bonded over their mutual appreciation for each other (and cars) and continued to share this throughout their long and happy 54 years of marriage. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Tidewell Hospice, especially Carol, whose kindness and dedication provided comfort to Peter during his last days. In addition, the family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from their extended family and friends who have stood by them during this time. Their presence and compassion, both near and far, have been a source of strength and solace throughout this difficult journey.
