Tribute

Audrey G. Welte died peacefully on Saturday, July 1, 2023, in Palm City, Florida after a brief illness at the age of 94. Audrey was the daughter of George and Gladys Gillies of Westchester. Audrey was a resident of Southampton, Long Island where she lived for over seventy years and most recently in Palm City, Florida. Audrey was born in New York City on November 12, 1928, and moved as a young child to Yonkers, New York where she completed her education. Audrey married William B. Nelson in 1950 and they moved to Southampton shortly thereafter to start their family of four children. In 1978, Audrey married Morris Welte who predeceased her in 2013. Audrey worked in the Financial Aid Office at Southampton College followed by 20 years working for the Town of Southampton, in her last position as Account Clerk in the Justice Court. Audrey was very involved as a volunteer in numerous organizations including St. John's Episcopal Church, The First Presbyterian Church, Southampton Hospital and the hospital's thrift shop, Heart of the Hamptons Food Pantry, and in her later years, at the Humane Society Thrift Shop in Vero Beach. Audrey and Morris enjoyed their retirement years traveling the world and the United States, always documenting their many adventures. At home, Audrey enjoyed gardening, cooking for family and friends, and sending cards to her loved ones and many friends to stay in touch. Following her retirement from the Justice Court, Audrey took up massage therapy, practicing on her friends and neighbors for over 17 years. According to her wishes, Audrey's body was donated to Science Care in Florida for research. At this time, there will be no service or calling hours. The family and friends will gather for her 95th birthday in November for a Celebration of Life. Audrey's ashes will be interred at Calverton National Cemetery alongside her beloved husband, Morris. Audrey is survived by her four children: Laura Nelson Farrara (Raymond,) Honorable Janet Nelson Galante (Richard,) Reverend Robert Nelson (Kelli), and Beth Nelson Farrara (Mark.) Grandchildren include: Kristin Stringer (Alex,) Kaitlin Bertino (Thomas,) Holly Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Evan Farrara, and Eric Nelson (Nicole.) Great-grandchildren include Tailia and Olivia Bertino and Henry Stringer. Her niece/godchildren include: Alana Young Torres (Robert) and great niece/godchild: Brittney Torres, niece Carol Adamy Rundle (Robert.) Nephews: Paul Adamy (Debra,) Mark Adamy (Holly,) and Cary Collier (Lisa.) Audrey was predeceased by her beloved sister Murial Adamy.
