A eulogy is a speech or writing which celebrates the life of a friend or loved-one, most often following a recent passing. Eulogies are typically delivered by a family member or a close family friend. If you’ve attended memorial services in the past, you’ve probably heard a variety of different eulogy styles.
Eulogies have been around for a long time. The first known documentation of the word appears in the 15th century and came from the Medieval Latin term “eulogium,” although it’s very likely that people have been offering up different forms of eulogies long before that.
Often, the types of eulogy delivered depends on the person being remembered. Were they good humored? Were they deeply committed to causes? Did they make any significant achievements in life?
A successful eulogy may provide comfort or inspiration, as well as establish a connection to the person for whom the eulogy is for.
The best eulogies are the ones that really capture the essence of the person, ones that trigger happy memories among those listening.A great eulogy can bring everyone together and provide a sense of closure at a very sad and difficult time.
It can make us laugh and it can make us cry, but most importantly, a good eulogy helps us to remember the person for who they were and helps everyone through their process of grieving.
